DIRECTOR OF LEGAL WRITING:

Job Description:

The Director of Legal Writing at Wayne State Law School administers and leads the School’s Legal Writing Program, which includes five other full-time legal writing instructors. In addition to acting as administrator for the program, the Director usually teaches one section of the two-semester legal writing course for first year law students and one section of the upper level Advanced Legal Writing course.

The Director trains and orients new legal writing faculty members; organizes the Orientation program for incoming first year law students; prepares the syllabi for Orientation and for the first year course; develops the common writing problems used by all sections; chairs weekly meetings of the legal writing faculty to discuss class content, teaching methods and related questions; handles student issues related to the legal writing program, including extension requests; arranges Law School visits by trial and appellate courts; coordinates the first year Moot Court and Practice Argument programs; and oversees the selection of legal writing award and prize recipients.

The Director serves on Law School committees and participates in faculty meetings, but does not vote on faculty hiring decisions. As an ex officio member of the Law School’s Legal Writing Committee, the Director participates in evaluating the performance of the legal writing faculty and in screening legal writing instructor candidates. It is expected that the Director will engage in professional advancement activities suitable to the position, such as participation in conferences, publication of articles, and performing service outside the University in the legal writing community.
